FORT WORTH, Texas (Feb. 26, 2010) -
The recipients of the 2009 US Youth Soccer adidas Competitive Coach of the Year award for Boys and Girls were announced tonight at the US Youth Soccer Awards Gala, held in conjunction with the 2010 US Youth Soccer adidas Workshop at the Fort Worth Convention Center in Fort Worth, Texas. The national adidas Competitive Coaches of the Year award winners are Keri Sarver of Akron, Ohio, (Girls) and Aaron Brunner of Woodbridge, Va., (Boys).

Hilary Kennedy, host of The US Youth Soccer Show on Fox Soccer Channel, set the stage for the night as the master of ceremonies for the more than 1,000 in attendance. Boys and Girls Recreation Coaches of the Year, Administrator of the Year, Volunteer of the Year, Goal and Save of the Year, Male and Female Young Referees of the Year, TOPSoccer Buddy of the Year and the Dr. Thomas Fleck Award were also presented during the Gala and the US Youth Soccer Hall of Fame inductees were honored as well.
Keri Sarver, of Akron, Ohio, teaches her players that they must practice technical aspects, but also master the mental, physical and emotional aspects to achieve success. Her Under-17 Girls Internationals Soccer Club bought into her philosophy, leading them to compete in the 2009 US Youth Soccer National Championships. Sarver's coaching resume consists of one national finalist, 13 regional semifinalists and five Ohio North State Championships. A true student of the game, Sarver is a USSF "A" License coach, the first female in Ohio North to achieve this level.

Aaron Brunner, of Woodbridge, Va., has a coaching philosophy that revolves around making the ball every player's favorite toy to empower players with confidence to focus on long-term development. A product of US Youth Soccer Olympic Development Program and now a USSF "A" License and National Youth License coach, he gives back by coaching for Virginia US Youth Soccer ODP and with Prince William Soccer. While achieving success at the competitive level, he continually reinforces the importance of sportsmanship.

Recipients of the Competitive Coach of the Year awards are selected by the US Youth Soccer Board of Directors on the basis of sportsmanship, player development, personal coaching development and community involvement (citizenship).

2009 NSCAA All-America Teams

DAYTON, Ohio - Senior Mandi Bäck became the first ever University of Dayton women's soccer player to be named a First Team NSCAA All-America selection when the 2009 Division I Teams were announced today.

Bäck is the first player from the Atlantic 10 to earn first team All-America honors from the NSCAA since Massachusetts' Erica Iverson was tabbed a first-teamer in 1997. The forward from North Olmsted, Ohio, led the Flyers to an unbeaten regular season, and the A-10 regular season and tournament championships in 2009.

Bäck led the Flyers in scoring for the fourth consecutive season, and finished her career as a four-time First Team All-Atlantic 10 selection. She tallied eight goals and nine assists in her senior campaign. She put away the deciding penalty kick in a shootout against Marquette that sent Dayton to the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament.

She was the 2007 Atlantic 10 Offensive Player of the Year, and the 2008 Ohio Player of the Year. Bäck was named to the A-10 All-Championship team twice (2008 & 2009).

Bäck intends to continue her soccer career at the next level. She finished her UD career with 37 goals (including 12 game-winners), 16 assists and 90 points. She played 6,308 minutes in 84 games during her four-year illustrious career. Her 37 goals place her fourth all-time at UD, while her 90 points is fifth.

 Congratulations to Brian Salco!

Teacher of the Year Recognized at Rocky River's City School Board   Meeting

Brian Salco, RRCSD Teacher of the Year, was recognized by the Board of Education at their September meeting.  He was presented with a resolution by Board Vice President Kathleen Goepfert.

Rocky River City School’s Teacher of the Year

Second grade teacher Brian Slaco is entering his 13th year in the Rocky River City School District. Brian’s positive impact on his students and his ability to reach each one were cited as the reasons for his nomination. Salco loves watching his students grow throughout the year and develop the skills needed to move from Goldwood to third grade at Kensington. “It makes the job worth doing every day,” he said.

Salco also serves as Goldwood Primary School’s technology coordinator. “My parents always had computers when I was growing up and technology has always been a big part of my life,” said Salco. He is a certified SMART Board instructor and has played a major role in training teachers at Goldwood on the interactive whiteboard technology. SMART Boards were installed in every classroom at Goldwood last year, thanks to money from the 2008 levy and grants from the Rocky River Education Foundation.

Salco is a graduate of Westlake High School and Bowling Green University. He played soccer at both institutions and continues his involvement in the sport by coaching at the Premier Team level and conducting camps and development programs.

Salco is married and has two children. His wife is also a teacher.
